Embracing joyful resolutions for a stress-free year

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, we often find ourselves swept up in the tradition of making resolutions.

But did you know that January is considered one of the most stressful times of the year and that most people have given up on their resolutions by the end of the month?

Making and keeping your new, healthy mindset can be stressful. So this year, let’s shift the focus from deprivation to joy, choosing resolutions that infuse everyday life with positivity and wellbeing.

Cultivate gratitude

Rather than framing resolutions around what you’ll give up, consider focusing on gratitude and being thankful for what you already have. Make gratitude a daily practice to reflect on the things you’re appreciative of. Research shows that writing down your thanks or appreciation for just three moments or events that occurred that day can significantly help boost your mood.

Don’t overthink it: your gratitude list may include giving thanks for a sunny day, a walk with a friend, or a hug from a loved one. It’s not the enormity of the moments to be grateful for – it’s about recognising that they occurred.

Embrace mindful moments

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook the present moment. Resolve to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. Whether it’s savouring a cup of tea, taking a mindful walk, or spending a few minutes in quiet reflection, these moments can bring a sense of calm and joy to your life. Don’t think you can find the time? On average, we spend more than two hours a day mindlessly scrolling on social media. So put down your smartphone and commit those first few minutes of the day to meditation or journalling instead.

Prioritise self-care

Instead of resolutions centred on deprivation, prioritise self-care instead. This could involve a stay with us here at Eden and reminding yourself of the importance of putting yourself and your needs first. If you can’t make it to us, commit to regular rejuvenating treatments, connect with nature, and nourish your body and soul through healthy food and taking time to rest.

Choose joyful movement

Shift the focus from strict exercise regimes to joyful movement. Engage in activities that bring you joy, whether it’s swimming, hiking, or practicing yoga. If you dislike exercising alone, invite friends to join you. Group sports such as netball can be an enjoyable way to get your competitive edge on, whilst socialising and having fun; or grab your partner for a romantic night of salsa dancing. The goal is to make physical activity a source of pleasure rather than a chore.

Foster connections

Instead of stressing over strict resolutions, focus on spending quality time with family and friends to improve your overall happiness and wellbeing. Head to your nearest bathhouse for a deeply relaxing session in a jacuzzi or sauna. You’ll achieve the double-whammy of relaxation, while socialising. Better yet, book a stay at Eden with a friend or family member for an unforgettable escape.

Learn something new

Inject excitement into your routine by resolving to learn something new. It could be a hobby, a skill, or simply exploring a topic you’ve always been curious about. Learning fosters a sense of accomplishment and joy, so sign up for those piano lessons or painting sessions and discover a new skill.

Practice mindful eating

Rather than restrictive diets, adopt a resolution centred around mindful eating. Pay attention to the flavours, textures, and nourishment each meal provides. Ideally, eat at a table and turn your smartphone off. Engage in family discussion (if applicable) or put on some classical music and light some candles for a relaxing ambiance. Taking time to mindfully enjoy the meal you have prepared promotes a healthy relationship with food and enhances your joy of dining. You’ll also be less likely to overeat as you pay attention to your cues of fullness and when you feel satiated.

At Eden Health Retreat, we understand the importance of holistic wellbeing. Our serene environment and tailored programs offer the perfect setting to kickstart your joyful resolutions for the year ahead. Embrace the journey, prioritise joy, and make this year a celebration of wellbeing and fulfillment.
