Finding the ideal life-work balance

When the deadlines are looming and the pressure between work, life, and other demands pile up, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. When this occurs, we tend to give up the good ‘demands’ of our day – eating well, regular exercise, etc – and focus on getting through our never-ending to-do list instead.

While there’s no magic wand that will make those everyday tasks disappear, there are ways you can learn to prioritise yourself and your own health. By filling your own cup first – through healthy food, stress-reducing exercises, and wellbeing practices – you can ensure you have enough to go around when it comes to taking care of work, stress, and family life.

At Eden, we encourage all our guests to educate themselves on the practice of filling their own cup first. The following ten steps can help you in your journey to a happier and more balanced life.

1. Set boundaries

If a visit to Eden isn’t possible right now, you can still create your own retreat at home. Fill your plate with nourishing, nutrient-rich whole foods, take time for an evening bath and stretch session, and begin each morning with either a walk in nature or a yoga and meditation practice. Light a good candle and listen to your favourite music even while you’re busy working, cleaning, or cooking. A relaxing environment is essential for good mental health, so make it as luxurious and relaxing as possible.

2. Learn to say ‘yes’ to yourself

Learning to say ‘yes’ to what you need before you please everyone else can be a game changer. When you answer ‘yes’ to your requirements, you will know how much time and energy you will have for others. Practice saying ‘no’ to others when your plate is already full, and do not hesitate to communicate your needs to colleagues and family members.

3. Prioritise self-care

Make self-care a priority in your life by taking regular breaks, practising mindfulness or meditation, and regularly indulging in activities that rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. This may take the form of massage, facials, or other relaxing treatments.

4. Have some digital downtime

Regularly switching off from work emails and social media can mean that you are fully present when you are practising self-care or when you are spending time with loved ones. You may be surprised by how much time you can regain once you detangle yourself from your devices – time that can be spent relaxing, exercising, or filling your cup.

5. Make a date with yourself

When we get busy, the first appointment we cancel is the one we make with ourselves. However, if you can make time for yourself when you are busy, then when life has calmed down, you are already in a positive and healthy practice. Your daily plan should always have time allocated for relaxation, hobbies, exercise, and family.

6. Exercise regularly

It doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do, as long as you move your body regularly. Find an exercise routine that you enjoy, whether it is yoga, hiking, swimming, or dancing and it will become a commitment you are more than happy to keep.

7. Make mealtimes a ritual

At Eden, we believe in nourishing the body with wholesome meals. Create your own mealtime rituals by enjoying nutritious, home-cooked meals with your family or engaging in mindful eating practices. Download our ebook, ‘A Taste of Eden’ for nourishing inspiration.

8. Connect with nature

Research shows the importance of spending regular time in nature. Go for a walk, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature with friends and family.

9. Delegate and share

Remember that you do not have to do it all alone. Delegate tasks at work and share responsibilities at home as much as possible.

10. Do not be afraid to ask for help

No person is an island. Asking for help can be a compliment to others and a saving grace for yourself. Communicate your needs to friends, family, and colleagues. Remember – to have it all, you do not have to do it all.

Finding the right balance between work and life is an ongoing journey, much like the one you experience at Eden Health Retreat. Try to embrace the process, be kind to yourself, and take small steps towards achieving harmony in your life.
